Housing

Lately, I've had my housing for next year on my mind. While I would love to live in the dorms again, I know that doing so is not very prevalent on SMU's campus after freshman year. My parents are allowing me to get an apartment with two other friends, however they worry about our happiness. They keep asking me, "Are you sure this is what you want to do?" I tell them I do, because if I stay on campus, I'll be living with basically freshman only. They then tell me that if I live off campus, it's likely that I'm going to feel apart from the university, and lose my sense of campus; I won't have the opportunity to be surrounded by others (as I am in the dorm), and I won't see all the people I used to run into, without effort on both sides of the relationship. I have the same worries as them. As excited as I am to live in a big apartment, have my own bedroom and bathroom, and have a kitchen, I really don't think it's the best idea. I think SMU should provide more housing for sophomores so it can keep kids on campus. By allowing students to live off campus just after their sophomore year, SMU really loses it's sense of community. Does anyone else feel this way?

I hope next year's apartment turns out to be my best option!

I had some of the same thoughts as you when considering living on or off campus for next year. Originally my roommate-to-be and I wanted to live in on campus apartments, but due to the bush library we don't have that option anymore.

I think that SMU should do its best to replace the on campus apartments because it is definitely the best of both worlds for a sophomore, getting out of the dorms and still staying on campus.

I think that next year I am going to get more involved with some campus activities so that I can still feel a part of SMU.

Good luck!

I think this is a good point, in that living off campus makes one lose their sense of belonging to the school. I think you should also consider what one would need to do in order to feel as if their a part of the SMU community even if they live off campus. Giving reason to why this would be so difficult would strengthen your argument.
