Inmate Sex Change?!

Earlier today, when I was at the gym, I was watching the nightly news while on the treadmill.  The news anchor reported that an inmate, named Michael, is trying to pass a contract that would allow him to get a sex change.  Michael would like to become "Michelle."  I support him if he wants to do this, but if he really wants the sex change, he should pay for it with his own money.  Somehow, he thinks that he community will fund this operation of his.  Keep in mind that Michael is in jail for murder.  He murdered his wife, and now wants to become a woman.  I don't think the tax payers should have to support such an operation for a murderer.  It's ridiculous that the story has even made it as far as to make it on the nightly news.  This case should have been dropped long ago, because it's never going to happen.  Community members have much more to worry about as far as their taxes go.  For example, they could be supporting the schools and parks with these same tax dollars that Michael believes should go towards funding his sex change.  What do you think of the situation?

Housing

Lately, I've had my housing for next year on my mind. While I would love to live in the dorms again, I know that doing so is not very prevalent on SMU's campus after freshman year. My parents are allowing me to get an apartment with two other friends, however they worry about our happiness. They keep asking me, "Are you sure this is what you want to do?" I tell them I do, because if I stay on campus, I'll be living with basically freshman only. They then tell me that if I live off campus, it's likely that I'm going to feel apart from the university, and lose my sense of campus; I won't have the opportunity to be surrounded by others (as I am in the dorm), and I won't see all the people I used to run into, without effort on both sides of the relationship. I have the same worries as them. As excited as I am to live in a big apartment, have my own bedroom and bathroom, and have a kitchen, I really don't think it's the best idea. I think SMU should provide more housing for sophomores so it can keep kids on campus. By allowing students to live off campus just after their sophomore year, SMU really loses it's sense of community. Does anyone else feel this way?

I hope next year's apartment turns out to be my best option!
